| | AAMEA: African American Males in Education Advisory | |
Historically, MMEP’s work has been on behalf of all students of color and American Indian students—true to this focus, in late 2007, the organization created an initiative focused exclusively on African American males in education.
The African American Males in Education Advisory (AAMEA) is a response to to the alarming and persistent academic achievement disparities between African American males and white students in Minnesota. These alarming rates have been highlighted at the national level as well. Minnesota is second only to Washington D.C. for the widest 4th grade reading gap in the nation according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress [NAEP]. Group members have agreed to shape and nurture this initiative, to create the space, literally and figuratively, for Minnesota to be empowered to act in collaboration with African American males and their educational aspirations. Our goals are to:
Advance and uphold that Black men and boys are vital assets to society and that all social policy should reflect their value. Raise the visibility and understanding of critical issues that impact educational outcomes of Black men and boys in Minnesota. Engage with community members to develop community-based solutions to disparities in educational outcomes and opportunities. Raise public and private levels of investment for better educational outcomes for Black men and boys in Minnesota. To be leaders in shaping a stronger Minnesota through identifying and strengthening the potential of African American males as equal contributors to our society.
