    African American Males.
    The state of education for African American males in Minnesota and across the nation is a crisis that calls for immediate attention. This brief calls for a new framework.

    The Black-White Achievement Gap: When Progress Stopped There is widespread awareness that there is a very substantial gap between the educational achievement of the white and the black population in our nation, and that the gap is as old as the nation itself. This report is about changes in the size of that gap, beginning with the first signs of a narrowing that occurred at the start of the last century, and continuing on to the end of the first decade of the present century.

    Yes We Can

    Yes We Can: The 2010 Schott 50 State Report on Black Males in Public Education reveals that the overall 2007/8 graduation rate for black males in the U.S. was only 47 percent. Half of the states have graduation rates for black male students below the national average. These statistics—and the other alarming data in this fourth biennial report— point to a national education and economic crisis.

    Journal of African American Males in Education

    JAAME is a peer-reviewed journal devoted to advancing scholarship and practice on African American males in education. JAAME publishes research on African American males throughout the educational pipeline (P-20), in various contexts (e.g., urban, suburban, rural), and in multiple capacities (e.g., students, teachers, faculty, staff, administrators).

    MN Orgs

    Council on Black Minnesotans

    COBM was created by the Minnesota legislature in July 1980. Its primary purpose is to advise the governor and legislature on the nature and intensity of issues confronting the state's black populations.

     

    NdCAD

    The Network for the Development of Children of African Descent (NdCAD) is a family education center based in St. Paul, Minn. They serve children, families and communities throughout the Twin Cities, offering a variety of literacy and cultural enrichment programs and services.

     

    Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ)

    Inspired by the Harlem Children’s Zone, in late 2007 community organizations began to collaborate in order to safeguard and guarantee opportunities for children growing up in the Northside of Minneapolis.

     

    WE WIN Institute

    WE WIN helps children create achievements. WE WIN’s programs are tailored to instill pride, confidence and academic and social skills. Students gain knowledge and experiences which honor and celebrate their cultural roots. They emphasize African history and culture to create pride for children of African descent; yet, celebrate and welcome children of all cultures into their programs.

    Philanthropy

    The Association of Black Foundation Executives

    For nearly four decades, ABFE has been a trailblazer for championing the interests of black communities within the philanthropic sector. They also recognize that black communities and the philanthropic leaders who serve those communities still face institutional and structural barriers that often hinder efforts to leverage philanthropy's powerful tools for positive, enduring social change.

     

    Open Society Institute & Soros Foundations Network

    The Open Society Institute’s Campaign for Black Male Achievement aims to address black men and boys exclusion form economic, social, educational and political life in the United States.

     

    Schott Foundation for Public Education

    Schott supports an Opportunity to Learn” frame on educational policy, which focuses on ensuring that resources are provided for all students to have an equitable opportunity to learn and produce high achievement outcomes. Their mission is to develop and strengthen a broad-based and representative movement to achieve fully resourced, quality preK-12 public education.

     

    Twenty-First Century Foundation (21CF)

    The 21CF mission is to lead, innovate and influence giving for Black community change. As one of the few, endowed, Black foundations in the U.S., Twenty-First Century Foundation works to advance the welfare of the Black community through strategic and collective grantmaking; special initiatives and research; donor education and donor services.

    Beyond the Bricks

    A 30-minute documentary produced by Koen & Washington Media, Beyond the Bricks explores solutions to the poor academic performance and low graduation rates of school-aged black males in the United States. The film follows two students from Newark, New Jersey, as they struggle against the school system to improve their educational circumstances, and includes interviews with educators, researchers, administrators, elected officials and activists who offer their ideas for solutions to the crisis facing black boys.     Bring Your ‘”A” Game

    A 22-minute film targeted to urban youth-specifically young boys and men who are most often the victims of poverty and lack strong male role models to encourage them to play a game that doesn’t naturally include them.
