MMEP involved with MN Race to the Top

March 19, 2010

To the MMEP Community:

As you are aware, the state of Minnesota recently submitted a proposal to the U.S. Department of Education for Race to the Top (RTTT) funding. Minnesota’s application was denied. That means Minnesota may risk not receiving millions of dollars in much-needed resources for our youth to achieve at their greatest potential.

Immediately after receiving news of the denied proposal, MMEP and community leaders were invited to the capitol to brainstorm ideas to strengthen the original proposal and clarify key terms within it, such as “cultural competency,” prior to resubmission for reconsideration.

As a result of that meeting, the group forwarded a letter to Senators Mary Olson and Patricia Torres Ray with a proposal to convene a cross-cultural conversation regarding the revision and resubmission that includes collaboration with the respective communities of the various state councils.

In an effort to discuss broad dimensions of shared goals and immediate action needed relative to current and proposed legislation regarding RTTT, MMEP and Hamline University are sponsoring a community convening Saturday, March 27, 2010.
